Cameron Van Dyke spent a week with the art students developing the concept and visual language for the sculpture. The pieces of the sculpture were fabricated in Cameron’s studio and then assembled at the site. The students were invited to view the progress daily and watch the installation process.

The sculpture Sheltered Flight embodies in abstract form an issue that almost every 13-14 year old deals with; The tension that is created between the sheltering of parents/teachers and the students desire to start making their own choices. The title additionally refers to an enclosed area where birds learn to fly before being set out in the wild – hopefully a metaphor for the Junior High experience.
